Blair Designs at the MFS Talent 2015 Fashion Show, Edinburgh

Metropolitan Fashion Show’s Designer Talent 2015 catwalk show kicks off tomorrow at No.8 Lister Square in Edinburgh, and as part of our countdown to the big event we had a chat with Scottish designer, Nicole Blair, about her brand Blair Designs and her latest collection.

What is your brand, Blair Designs, all about?
Blair Designs is a cutting edge clothing brand specialising in unique clothing items that suit the customers personality. The Blair Designs brand is about standing out and making the statement to be recognised. Blending in is a thing of the past; stand up and look fabulous!

Sum up your new collection in one sentence.

Fun, unique and out there. We weren't made for blending in; be different and express yourself through your clothes.

What do you think makes your brand, and especially your new collection, unique?
What makes my brand unique is that I don't follow, as following others doesn't make you stand out. Being bold is part of my personality and this is reflected in the brand, people remember you when you're bold and they never forget statement clothing.

Who/what are you inspired by?
I'm inspired by my Gran and Scotland. Watching my gran use her sewing machine and making clothes when I was younger made me want to become a fashion designer. I started looking up to Alexander Mcqueen and I wanted to be like him, wanted to have clothes on the runway and have my name in lights! My Gran and Grandpa never said I couldn't achieve my dreams and here I am today, my dreams are what keep me going. If we lived without dreams where would we be? Scotland is another big part of my life and my inspiration as I love where I come from and Scotland is an amazing place with a great history. I love tartan and I use it on my garments to make them different and unique, but also personal. Knowing that I'm part of Scotland and that it's a part of me is such an overwhelming feeling.

What advice do you have for new designers looking to launch a collection of their own?
The process is hard and you don't become who you want to be overnight (I wish I did!) You have to work extremely hard and get to know people along the way. Be resourceful and don't be scared to take a risk. Failure can be a good thing as it helps you become stronger to not fail again, it pushes you and it makes you a more confident person. Be prepared to make mistakes but in the long run you'll see the benefits and enjoy the experience. And most of all be yourself - always be yourself!

What does MFS Talent 2015 mean to you? Why are you excited to take part?
Metropolitan Fashion Show has been my fairy godmother! They have helped me step into completely new territory in Edinburgh, they have relieved me of stress and been there when I needed them. The team have been amazing and I'm extremely grateful that they wanted me to take part in the Talent 2015 show. its an experience I will never forget! I'm looking forward to taking part as it's on a much bigger scale than what I'm used to, and I'm so excited to meet new people and have the possibility to showcase my work in new locations.

Where would you like to be in 5 years’ time?
In 5 years time, I would love to have a multi-million pound business with my clothing in stores such as Topshop, Selfridges and Harrods! I would also love to expand internationally, heading over to Australia to launch a swimwear collection. Nothing like a good challenge!

Where can we see you next?
Right now I'm working in Dundonald and expanding my fashion business, but you can follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to find out where my next show will be.

Blair Designs will be showcasing their new collection at the MFS Talent 2015 catwalk show tomorrow, Saturday 15th August in Edinburgh. You can still buy tickets for the MFS Talent 2015 show here, or visit the Talent 2015 event page for more information.

Darren Ruddy at the MFS Talent 2015 Fashion Show, Edinburgh

With just one day to go until the Metropolitan Fashion Show’s Designer Talent 2015 catwalk show in Edinburgh, we speak to young Scottish designer Darren Ruddy about his collection, his inspirations, and where he's sees his brand in 5 years' time, in the third of our Designer Interviews series.

What is your brand, Darren Ruddy, all about?
The brand is about creating affordable luxury designs, finishing to an industry standard. The cut, silhouette, fabric and prints are my four essential components. I like to juxtapose different fabrics and textures to create a wardrobe that’s interchangeable.

Sum up your new collection in one sentence.
My new collection is a fun, modern A/W 15/16 collection with a 90's feel to it.

What do you think makes your brand, and especially your new collection, unique?
The brand is in its infancy, and my consumer has a wide age range which I feel is important.

Who/what are you inspired by?
My gran, Sandra Potter, has been sewing since she was a little girl. She has custom made wedding dresses for people, knitting, sewing. She's a woman who can basically do everything with a sense of calm and finesse. The sewing bug skipped a few generations but I'm glad I have found a passion I love.

What advice do you have for new designers looking to launch a collection of their own?
This is the stage that I am at currently. I do feel it’s easy to get distracted by what’s out on the catwalks for each season which can curb your edge, but the one key piece of information I have taken from college and university is 'you’re only as strong as your research', especially first hand recorded research.

What does MFS Talent 2015 mean to you? Why are you excited to take part?
It's a fun, talented team of individuals who come together and merge to create this opportunity. Being part of the team for the second time around, I admire each and every person involved and the outcome is always to the highest quality.

Where would you like to be in 5 years’ time?
I’d like to have a small business online, with limited pieces for each season and hopefully be successful.

Where can we see you next?
I am currently researching some textile applications, putting my HND in Textiles to some use and continue designing garments with a commercial, yet unique appeal.

You can see Darren's whole collection on the catwalk at the Talent 2015 fashion show tomorrow! You can still buy tickets for the MFS Talent 2015 show here, or visit the Talent 2015 event page for more information.

A true advocate of traditional Scottish fashion, Siobhan Mackenzie aims to introduce traditional Scottish kilt design into the modern day by contemporising the designs and giving them a modern, luxury twist.

What is your brand, Siobhan Mackenzie, all about?
Siobhan Mackenzie aims to bring Scottish dress into the 21st century by breaking the rules of tradition with innovation within design.

Sum up your new collection in one sentence.
Exclusive luxury Scottish textiles combined with pioneering Scottish design which distinctively re-designs the kilt into a modern era.

What do you think makes your brand, and especially your new collection, unique?
The brand has re-invented the kilt into the fashion world by using truly unique designs and processes to create a signature luxury style.

Who/what are you inspired by?
The concept for my company originated from the history behind my clan- Mackenzie, and my Highland roots. An inspiring role model for me is John Culbert- MD of Glenisla (where I studied a kilt-making internship as a student). John’s diligent hard working attitude has led him to great success and by adopting that same attitude I hope to follow in his footsteps.

What advice do you have for new designers looking to launch a collection of their own?
My favourite quote is “If you can dream it, you can achieve it!” and I thoroughly stick by this- don’t be afraid to break the rules and step outside of the box- innovation is key in developing a signature style.

What does the Metropolitan Fashion Show Talent 2015 event mean to you? Why are you excited to take part?
I’m excited to take part amongst other designers as I love to not only showcase my work to new people but to meet new people and show the world what I am capable of.

Where would you like to be in 5 years’ time?
I aim to have stores internationally but New York would be the main goal. I strive to keep the brand’s Made in Scotland ethos wherever we end up.

Where can we see you next?
I am always taking part in new opportunities but the best way to find me is via my website http://www.siobhanmackenzie.com/ . Customers can contact me to book design consultations and there are galleries to view some of my previous work.
